19 Aug 2016 — Luís Almeida took sixth place in the Monza ’79 GTP-C in the opening round of the 1983 World Endurance Championship series.

Almeida traded positions with Ricardo Gomes in a determined fight for fourth starting midway through, running within a couple turns of each other over a range of eight laps. Driving the Lancia LC2-84, Almeida ran the majority pursuing Gomes after targeting him on the first lap. In the end Almeida settled into sixth the 16 laps running to the checkered flag.

1983 World Endurance Championship series moves on to Round 2 in a week at Silverstone ’79. The series has eight drivers competing for points in the championship.

Phil Brown leads the championship in a tight campaign over Matt Geddes, separated by just a couple finishing positions. The title continues to be challenged by Ricardo Gomes, Bruno Chacon, Porfirio Dias Santos, Luís Almeida, Nuno Gaiteira, and Mark Craggs as well. The Top 5 places are an open field for eight drivers in the running with six races remaining.
