03 Oct 2016 — Luís Almeida raced past the checkered flag a tight 0.036 seconds ahead of Naomi Makin to take 11th place in the Watkins Glen – Nascar Polo93 in the opening round of the VW Polo Trophy Season 4 series.
Almeida mixed it up with Ashley Bevis in a close battle for 11th starting midway through, passing each other twice over a range of five laps. Almeida spent nearly equal parts leading Bevis after being caught by him on lap 8. After losing the spot on lap 10, Almeida passed Bevis and into 11th place on lap 15, and kept it the remaining couple laps to the harrowing finish with Makin.
VW Polo Trophy Season 4 series moves on to Round 2 in a week at Brianza Junior. The series has 13 drivers competing for points in the championship.
Michele Boffelli leads the championship in a tight campaign over Nuno Gaiteira, separated by just a few grid spots. The title continues to be challenged by Ricardo Gomes, Mark Carty, Manuel Alves, Juan Aul, Yahya Zakari, Gino Bardelli, Joao Botelho De Sousa, Porfirio Dias Santos, Luís Almeida, Naomi Makin, and Ashley Bevis as well. The Top 5 places are an open field for 13 drivers in the running with four races remaining.
