03 Aug 2016 — Luís Almeida captured fifth place in the Charade Gordini in Round 6 of the Renault R8 Gordini Cup series.
Almeida swapped leads with Luis Fernandes in a long and tense battle for fourth from the middle stages, running within an apex of each other over a range of 15 laps. Almeida drove the majority leading Fernandes after engaging and passing him on the fourth lap. Almeida fended off a prolonged attack by Fernandes midway through, staying just a turn ahead of him over an unbroken run of 10 laps. Ultimately Almeida lost the spot on lap 14 and settled into fifth the couple laps running to the checkered flag.
Almeida remains in sixth in the standings, cutting the gap to fifth’s Simon Swarbrick to nine points. Almeida has five starts and finished as high as fifth.
Renault R8 Gordini Cup series moves on to Round 7 in a week at Ruapuna Raceway. The series has 21 drivers competing for points in the championship.
Mark Carty leads the championship in a tight campaign over Adolfo Onrubia, separated by just a couple grid spots. The title continues to be challenged by André Gomes, Jari Bruppacher, Simon Swarbrick, Luís Almeida, Porfirio Dias Santos, Philipp Pichler, Joe Donohue, Matt Faust, Antonio Tavares, Luis Fernandes, Arjen Weidman, Joaquim Azevedo, Harry-Lee Wills, Rafael Iwata, Mark Craggs, Jack Hunt, Bruno Chacon, and Teodor Ivanov as well. The Top 5 places are an open field for 20 drivers in the running with four races remaining.
