13 Jul 2016 — Luís Almeida captured fifth place in the Sandown International Gordini in Round 3 of the Renault R8 Gordini Cup series.
Almeida swapped leads with Jari Bruppacher in a prolonged fight for fifth in the late stages, battling over a stretch of 17 laps. Almeida drove nearly all leading Bruppacher after being engaged by him on lap 6. After losing the spot on lap 19, Almeida passed Bruppacher and into fifth place on lap 21, and held it the remaining lap to the conclusion.
Almeida moves up to seventh in the standings, five points behind Adolfo Onrubia. Almeida has two starts and finished as high as fifth.
Renault R8 Gordini Cup series moves on to Round 4 in a week at Botniaring Racing Circuit. The series has 16 drivers competing for points in the championship.
Mark Carty leads the championship in a tight campaign over André Gomes, separated by just a handful of finishing positions.
