25 Jun 2016 — Marcelo Aiello made a final pass on the last lap for a sixth-place finish in the WEGTE class in the Sebring Int’l – 12hr Multiclass in Round 8 of the G.E.A.R. World Endurance Series.
Aiello swapped leads multiple rounds with Istvan Toth in a drawn-out battle for sixth from the middle stages, fighting over a range of 35 laps. Driving the Ferrari 458 GTE, Aiello drove the majority pursuing Toth after targeting him on the first lap. Aiello got around Toth for the second time and into sixth place on his final lap.
Aiello finished the series 21st in the WEGTE class standings. He made one start and finished as high as sixth.
G.E.A.R. World Endurance Series finished its season after eight rounds spanning two months. A total of 59 drivers competed for points in the multiclass championships.
Fahn Thomas won the WEP2 class championship in a tight campaign over Alex Freitas, separated by just a handful of finishing positions in the end. Thomas led 215 laps and took five victories in seven races. Porfirio Dias Santos, April Dillon, and Matteo Tolari finished out the Top 5.
Jerry Chen took the WEGTE class championship in a tight campaign over Barrett Erickson, separated by just a couple finishing positions in the end. Chen led 33 laps and took one win in seven races. Mike Erickson, Mark Carty, and Istvan Toth rounded out the Top 5.
John Van Der Geest took the WEP1 class championship, leading 206 laps and taking three victories in seven races. Tobias Mueller, Carl Middleton, Ken Jagger, and Ricardo Azevedo finished out the Top 5.
