18 Apr 2016 — Lazaros Filippakos passed through more than half the field from ninth on the starting grid to first place at the finish line in the Braga Vasco Sameiro VTA-2L in the opening round of the Vintage Tourring Car Challenge series.
Filippakos spent nearly equal parts of 14 laps total leading Csaba Lakó after challenging and passing him on lap 12, coming from as many as eight positions back. Filippakos got around Lakó and into first place on lap 12, and defended it against pressure by Lakó the remaining eight laps to the conclusion.
Csaba Lakó raced at the front of the field most of all drivers, leading 11 of 19 laps but ultimately settling for second place.
Driving the Datsun 510, Lakó ran nearly equal parts of 14 laps total leading Lazaros Filippakos after being engaged by him on lap 6. Lakó fended off an extended attack by Filippakos midway through, staying just a straightaway ahead of him over an unbroken run of six laps. In the end Lakó lost the spot on lap 12 and settled into second the eight laps running to the finish.
Porfirio Dias Santos captured fourth place.
Luís Almeida made his 10th start in the Ford Escort Mk1 and captured sixth place.
Vintage Tourring Car Challenge series moves on to Round 2 in a week at Brands Hatch. The series has nine drivers competing for points in the championship.
Driving the Ford Escort Mk1, Dias Santos drove the majority of 16 laps total leading Antonio Tavares after being engaged by him on the second lap. Dias Santos fended off an extended attack by Tavares midway through, staying just a car length ahead of him over a solid run of eight laps. Ultimately Dias Santos lost the spot on lap 16 and settled into fourth the few laps running to the conclusion, missing Tavares ahead by just 0.501 seconds at the line.
Almeida ran the majority of 18 laps total leading Paul Huggett after challenging and passing him on lap 7. Almeida got around Huggett and into sixth place on lap 7, and held it the remaining dozen laps to the checkered flag.
In the 10 career runs taken by Almeida in the Ford Escort Mk1, he has finished as high as fourth twice.
Antonio Tavares took third place.
Tavares spent the majority of 16 laps total pursuing Porfirio Dias Santos after targeting him on the second lap, coming from as many as three positions back. Tavares launched a prolonged challenge at Dias Santos midway through, staying within a car length behind him and gaining ground over a solid run of eight laps. Tavares cleared Dias Santos and into third place on lap 16, and defended it against pressure by Dias Santos the remaining four laps to the conclusion.
