04 Jun 2016 — Yuri Matias spent a race-leading 12 laps at the front to win his first career win in the Queensland Raceway Skoda ’08 in Round 5 of the Aussie Skoda series.
Matias mixed it up with Fernando Silva in a long and tense battle for the race lead starting early on, running within an apex of each other over a span of 20 laps. Matias drove nearly equal parts leading Silva after being engaged by him on the first lap. After losing the spot on lap 3, Matias got around Silva and into first place on lap 14, and defended it against pressure by Silva the remaining 10 laps to the conclusion.
The first victory for Matias came on his first outing in the Skoda Octavia ’08. Matias is 12th in the standings for the series. He has one start and led 12 of his 23 laps raced while taking the victory once.
Fernando Silva led the pack for 10 laps in a run to second place.
Silva mixed it up with Yuri Matias in a lengthy and determined battle for the race lead starting early on, running within a turn of each other over a stretch of 20 laps. Silva ran nearly equal parts leading Matias after catching and passing him on the third lap, coming from as many as three places back. Silva fended off an extended attack by Matias early in the running, staying just a car length ahead of him over a solid run of six laps. Ultimately Silva lost the spot on lap 14 and settled into second the 10 laps running to the checkered flag.
Silva moves up to sixth in the standings, now tied in points with fifth’s Ricardo Gomes following Gomes’s eighth-place finish. Silva has three starts and led 10 of his 68 laps while finishing as high as second.
Aussie Skoda series moves on to Round 6 in a week at Pukekohe. The series has 48 drivers competing for points in the championship.
Making his 100th career start, Daryl Brady captured a seventh-place finish.
André Gomes won third place.
Brady spent all of 15 laps total pursuing Jason Fief after targeting him on the first lap, coming from as many as 12 spots back. Brady launched an extended challenge at Fief midway through, staying within car lengths behind him and gaining ground over a continuous run of 13 laps. In the end Brady settled into seventh the 11 laps running to the finish.
Brady is 24th in the standings for the series. He has one start and finished as high as seventh.
Gomes ran the majority of 16 laps total pursuing Carlos Reina after targeting him on lap 8, coming from as many as six positions back. Gomes launched a prolonged challenge at Reina in the middle stages, staying within an apex behind him and keeping pace over a continuous run of 11 laps. Gomes passed Reina and into third place on lap 19, and defended it against pressure by Reina the remaining five laps to the checkered flag.
Gomes moves up to seventh in the standings, eight points behind Fernando Silva. Gomes has two starts and finished as high as third.
Carlos Reina captured fourth place.
In the 100 career starts taken by Brady, he has driven the Skoda Octavia ’08 47 times. This was the first time he matched the car against the circuit at Queensland Raceway.
Reina ran the majority of 16 laps total leading André Gomes after being caught by him on lap 8. Reina fended off an extended challenge by Gomes midway through, staying just a car length ahead of him over a continuous run of 11 laps. Ultimately Reina lost the spot on lap 19 and settled into fourth the few laps running to the conclusion.
Reina moves up to the lead of the standings, two points ahead of Rasa Djordjevic. Reina has five starts and finished as high as fourth.
Mark Carty took fifth place.
Carty took the fight back and forth with André Gomes in a long and tense fight for fifth starting midway through, running within a bumper of each other over a span of 14 laps. Carty spent the majority pursuing Gomes after being caught and passed by him on lap 9. Carty launched a prolonged attack at Gomes in the middle stages, staying within a bumper behind him and keeping pace over a continuous run of eight laps. Ultimately Carty settled into fifth through attrition the 11 laps running to the checkered flag.
Carty is 20th in the standings for the series. He has one start and finished as high as fifth.
