23 Apr 2016 — Mike Erickson spent a race-leading 64 laps at the front of the WEGTE class to win his 30th career win in the St Petersburg Multiclass in Round 2 of the G.E.A.R. World Endurance Series.Erickson ran the majority of 50 laps total leading Tim Weller after catching and passing him on lap 12. Erickson got around Weller and into first place on lap 12, and kept it the remaining 63 laps to the checkered flag.The noteworthy win for Erickson came on his 14th outing in the Viper SRT GTS-R. Erickson is fifth in the WEGTE class standings for the series. He has one start and led 64 of his 75 laps raced while taking the victory once.Fahn Thomas controlled the top spot in the WEP2 class most of all, leading 71 of 79 laps on a run to first place.Ricardo Azevedo led all drivers in the WEP1 class most for 82 of 85 laps on a run for first place.Driving the Acura ARX 03, Thomas traded positions with Alex Freitas in a prolonged battle for the race lead from the middle stages, wrangling over a stretch of 79 laps. Thomas spent nearly all leading Freitas after being engaged by him on the first lap. After losing the spot on lap 40, Thomas cleared Freitas and into first place on lap 48, and kept it the remaining 31 laps to the conclusion.Thomas is fourth in the WEP2 class standings for the series. He has one start and led 71 of his 79 laps raced while taking the victory once.Azevedo traded positions with Carl Middleton in a drawn-out fight for the race lead starting midway through, battling over a range of 80 laps. Azevedo drove nearly all leading Middleton after being caught by him on the first lap. After losing the spot on lap 35, Azevedo got around Middleton and into first place on lap 38, and kept it the remaining 47 laps to the checkered flag.Azevedo remains in the lead of the WEP1 class standings, increasing the lead over rival Carl Middleton to six points. Azevedo has two starts and led 118 of his 126 laps while taking the victory twice.John Van Der Geest made his 10th start in the Porsche 919 Hybrid and captured third place in the WEP1 class.G.E.A.R. World Endurance Series moves on to Round 3 in two weeks at Interlagos. The series has 29 drivers competing for points in the multiclass championships.Driving the Porsche 919 Hybrid, Van Der Geest traded positions with Carl Middleton in a prolonged fight for second from the beginning, battling over a span of 81 laps. Van Der Geest spent the majority pursuing Middleton after catching him on the first lap. Ultimately Van Der Geest settled into third the 73 laps running to the checkered flag.Van Der Geest moves up to fourth in the WEP1 class standings, one point behind Tobias Mueller. Van Der Geest has two starts and finished as high as third.In the 10 career runs taken by Van Der Geest in the Porsche 919 Hybrid, he has led 62 laps in all and taken the win twice.Jerry Chen led the WEGTE field for 10 laps in a run to fourth place.Alex Freitas led the WEP2 field for eight laps in a run to second place.Tim Weller led the WEGTE field for a lap in a run to second place.Carl Middleton logged three laps at the front of the WEP1 class in a second-place run.Chen spent nearly all of 43 laps total leading Istvan Toth after catching and passing him on lap 25. Chen got around Toth and into fourth place on lap 25, and kept it the remaining 49 laps to the checkered flag.Chen remains in the lead of the WEGTE class standings, two points ahead of Barrett Erickson. Chen has two starts and led 33 of his 111 laps while taking the victory once.Driving the Acura ARX 03, Freitas mixed it up with Fahn Thomas in a prolonged battle for the race lead starting midway through, battling over a stretch of 79 laps. Freitas drove the majority pursuing Thomas after engaging him on the first lap. In the end Freitas settled into second the 32 laps running to the checkered flag.Freitas moves up to the lead of the WEP2 class standings, six points ahead of Porfirio Dias Santos. Freitas has two starts and led 10 of his 117 laps while finishing as high as second.Driving the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Weller swapped leads with Barrett Erickson in a drawn-out fight for second late in the action, wrangling over a range of 42 laps. Weller spent nearly equal parts leading Erickson after being caught by him on lap 33. After losing the spot on lap 54, Weller got around Erickson and into second place on lap 70, and defended it against pressure by Erickson the remaining five laps to the conclusion.Weller is sixth in the WEGTE class standings for the series. He has one start and led one of his 74 laps raced while finishing as high as second.Driving the Toyota TS040, Middleton mixed it up with Ricardo Azevedo in a prolonged battle for the race lead starting midway through, wrangling over a span of 80 laps. Middleton ran the majority pursuing Azevedo after catching him on the first lap.
